Susan Heller, the author, is reported to have said, “When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.” In order to place limits on financial losses due to emergencies while traveling, the Global Travel Shield Comprehensive Class Plan is a well-designed travel insurance policy with generous benefits. This budget travel insurance has a better satisfaction guarantee than the Advantage Asset product from MH Ross; however, its travel and medical benefits are not as generous as the TravelSafe Vacation Plan from TravelSafe Insurance or the Custom Plan from CSA Travel Protection.
Apropos of lost baggage, the author Regina Nadelson quipped, “Most travel is best of all in the anticipation or the remembering; the reality has more to do with losing your luggage.” Global Travel Shield compensates $500 for lost baggage and $200 for baggage delays. This travel insurance policy also reimburses the cost of any prepaid and nonrefundable expenses if the trip is canceled prior to the departure date or during the trip for the following reasons:
- Adverse weather or natural disasters that interrupt travel services for at least 24 hours
- Death of a covered person, covered person’s family or traveling companion within 30 days of trip departure
- Felonious assault
- Financial default or bankruptcy of the covered person’s hotel, tour operator or transportation providers
- Hijacking
- Mandatory evacuation at the destination due to hurricane
- Quarantine
- Subpoena
- Terrorist incident
- Unexpected or unintended injury, illness or disease that affects the covered person or a family member or traveling companion
This travel insurance extends benefits for emergency medical and dental expenses incurred during the trip with a few caveats. The policy does not cover pre-existing conditions. For example, if someone on the policy visited a physician or dentist during the 60 days prior to the trip and received advice, treatment or prescriptions, any emergency during the insured travel that is related to the condition that required the consultation will not be covered. The travel insurance policy stipulates that the $25,000 emergency medical and dental benefit is available only if the expenses do not exceed what is reasonable and customary for charges in the geographic areas where the expenses are incurred. The charges must be absolutely necessary and fall into the following categories:
- Hospital stay, supplies and services
- Private duty services of licensed nurses (practical or registered) during hospital confinement
- Surgical procedures and treatments by medical doctors or dentists
Emergency medical evacuation, transportation or repatriation is covered up to $25,000. A $100,000 benefit is due to the named beneficiaries in case the insured dies or is dismembered as a result of a common carrier accident. The accident does not need to have occurred in actual transit. The travel insurance benefit is payable even if the accident occurs in an airport if the insured party is there in order to board or alight from a scheduled airplane. One caveat in this travel insurance policy is that the accidental death or dismemberment must happen within 100 days of the accident date. In situations where the deceased’s remains disappear because of the wreck or sinking of a schedule airplane, the insured will be considered deceased by the travel insurance provider if the remains are not recovered within 52 weeks.
This travel insurance withholds the accidental death and dismemberment benefit if the death or dismemberment of the insured occurs in the following circumstances:
- Any activity while in the service of a military branch of any nation within the United Nations
- Any disease or sickness
- Being under the influence of drugs other than prescribed by a medical doctor or dentist
- Consumption of alcohol in excess of the local legal limit
- Cosmetic surgery, except for reconstructive surgery related to an accident
- Driving or riding in a rental vehicle
- Operating an aircraft as a crew member or learning to fly
- Suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury while sane
